Transmission Lines to Carry Wind Power Across US Sparks Controversy

Clean Line Energy Partners wants to build a $2.2 billion 750-mile-long high-voltage transmission lines to carry power generated by wind turbines in Kansas through Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. However, they are running into a snag as farmers worry that the proposed transmission line could interfere with their livelihood. Cleanline says that the project will be an economic boon, with all four states benefiting from new jobs and lower electricity costs. Property owners worry that a private company could simply take over land that in some cases has been in their families for generations.

New Processing Technique Makes LED’s Brighter and More Resilient

Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a new process that makes light emitting diodes brighter (LED’s) and more resilient by applying a coat of gallium nitride with a layer of phosphorus-derived acid. The researchers started with polar gallium nitride, etched to surface of the material with phosphoric acid and added organic molecules containing phosphorus – which self-assembled into a monolayer on the surface of the LED. The produced layer further increase luminescence and improved the stability of the material.

Oklahoma Seeks to Boost Injection Well Tests

Oklahoma gas and oil regulators approved tentative rules requiring energy operators to conduct injection well mechanical integrity testing and other data-gathering requirements each day as part of an effort to determine the cause of increased tremors in the state. The proposed regulation must now be approved by the Oklahoma Legislature before it adjourns May 30 and be signed into law by Governor Mary Fallin. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission said that the gathered data will help researchers in developing maps that could be used to quickly identify areas of concern regarding induced seismic risks.

BP’s Gulf Redemption May Take Decade to Supply Barrels

It was only last week that BP acquired the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s approval to resume bidding for federal drilling rights after the company was banned in 2012 because of safety concerns. Although BP has regained credibility with regulators, investors will not see any upside unless the London-based company discovers oil and constructs platforms to deliver it, a process that can take a decade, said Chris Kettenman, an analyst at Prime Executions Inc.
